Eucalyptus grows in arid regions around the globe and the trees are a good source for fiber, lumber and veneer. Originating in Australia, Eucalyptus trees have been planted around the world quickly spreading across the landscape. Almost every part of the tree is used commercially making it a good plantation tree. The tops are used for pulp, the upper logs are used for lumber and the trunk can be sliced into veneer. Eucalyptus veneer logs can yield highly figured, plain and pommele grain patterns. Fuming is a process that starts with natural veneer being placed in a vessel followed by a chemical treatment that react with the tannins in the veneer. This treatment causes the wood to change color creating an attractive blend of dark colors similar to Walnut or Ebony.
